Baptism | Shepherd of the Lake

Identity & Purpose

  • You belong to God. There is nothing you need to do to earn God’s love and forgiveness, and there’s nothing you can possibly do to make God stop loving you.

  • Baptism is a public declaration and celebration of your core identity, which has been true your whole life: You are a child of God.

  • In baptism, we hear the promises of God’s unconditional love and forgiveness made known to us in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus.

  • Baptism is a commissioning – literally a co-missioning.

  • In baptism, your life’s mission is joined to the mission of Christ: to love God with all you’ve got, to love yourself, and to love your neighbor as yourself.

  • None of us can do this perfectly

  • And none of us can do it alone! We come together as a community of faith for worship, learning, mutual support, and service – to remember who we are, whose we are, and what our purpose is – and to fill us up for our daily lives.

Your mission as a baptized person, should you choose to accept it, is to remember your core identity as a beloved Child of God, and to allow the light of God’s love to shine through the particular shape of your life, just as God created you, one day at a time.
