What is a Columbarium?
A columbarium is a group of small compartments or niches designed to hold the cremated remains (cremains) of loved ones who have died. Each niche comes with an engraved exterior bronze plaque.

Single or Double Niche?
The cremation urn(s) are placed in one niche with a granite front. Each niche is also provided an engraved bronze plaque on the exterior with name, birth, and death dates.

Memorial Wall
If you plan to be laid to rest elsewhere but want a lasting memorial at your church home, we offer a bronze plaque placed on a Memorial Wall. Family and friends can then be reminded of you and your support of the church.

Trends in Cremation
Our ancestors were typically laid to rest in burial grounds adjoining rural churches or in city mega cemeteries. Land was inexpensive and plentiful. Cremation was unheard of or less than 5%.

Currently, our ever growing population is concentrating in large expanding urban areas. The increasing demand and cost of land have made large cemeteries less accessible, feasible, and affordable. In addition, our population does not always put down roots in one city or region for their entire lives. Cremation rates are now approaching 70%.

Cremation rates are expected to top 90%. A practical alternative for burial has once again become sites adjacent to churches for the cremated remains of congregants and friends of the church.

Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church is proud to offer Shepherd’s Path Memorial Columbarium as an alternative, covering our congregation throughout life and beyond.

An Alternative to Cemetery Burial Plots
Many people use the cremation box returned from the crematorium to place in the columbarium niche. Or an urn may be purchased and placed in the niche.

When comparing this cost to embalming, purchasing a casket, purchasing a vault, and purchasing a cemetery plot we find that families can save thousands of dollars with a cremation and columbarium burial.
