Children of all ages are welcome to commune at Shepherd of the Lake
We practice an open table. ALL people are invited to experience the love, grace, forgiveness and belonging - the presence of Jesus - that's offered to us in this meal.
So - if your one-year-old child holds out her hand, please know that she's welcome to the body of Christ, broken for her. We are happy to give her the bread, and guide her chubby little hand to dip it in the grape juice. If you'd rather wait until she is older, that's okay too. Some families understand "First Communion" as something to look forward to, a special event that they can remember. Some families want their children to receive communion as early as they are physically able and then come to Communion 101 to grow into an understanding of what they've already been folded into. There is no right or wrong way. We will leave it up to you to decide whether you would like your children to receive Holy Communion prior to the Communion 101 Retreat - just let the communion server know your preference. Either way, we look forward to worshiping with you, gathered together as the Body of Christ.
Communion 101 Retreat
The Communion 101 Retreat is for 3rd and 4th Grade students who have not yet completed Communion Instruction. This half-day retreat helps youth and their parents grow in a deeper understanding of communion through fun lessons, videos and activities like baking communion bread and painting chalices. Children who have completed the Communion 101 Retreat will be recognized on a Sunday in worship.
5th Graders and up have special sessions if parents feel they should receive some instruction before taking communion during Wednesday Night Worship or Sunday Worship.
