Christ is risen! Christ is risen indeed! Notice that in this ancient Easter acclamation, we speak in the present tense. It’s not “Christ was risen” only in some historical context. Rather, we rejoice in that Jesus is alive, on that first Easter Sunday, and now in our own time. As Christians we are invited on a surprising journey from death to life. Our liturgies for baptisms and funerals quote from the New Testament book of Romans: “Therefore we were buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we also might walk in newness of life.
