  • Shepherd's Path Community Garden | Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church | Prior Lake, MN

Growing together Shepherd's Path Community Garden (SPCG) provides a collective space for gardeners who are interested in planting, nourishing, and producing fresh produce and flowers. The original garden The original garden was setup in 2008 by Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church (SOLLC) to enable people in the community to grow their own food economically, and located in the space that now houses the Lake Ridge Apartments on McKenna Rd NW in Prior Lake. With the help of garden enthusiasts Katy Hallberg, Charles Wangerin and Kermit Mahlum, the garden grew to 57 plots, and had15 inches of black dirt, mulched paths, a locked fence, city water connection, kids play area, and a strong garden community growing a variety of produce. New location When SOLLC sold this parcel of land in 2023, the garden was moved to its current location in Horkey Park at Shepherds Path near McKenna Crossing and Highway 42 with help from campus partners, members, and the commuity. Campus partner Presbyterian Homes & Services (McKenna Crossing), commissioned a survey of the land and a design of the garden, and purchased a fence with a partial grant from Hy-Vee. Once the City of Prior Lake approved the project and the use of city park land, Ron and Tim Ames removed trees, excavated the area removing clay and replacing it with the prior garden's black dirt and new compost. They also leveled-out the garden, setup garden plots, mulched paths, and provided a paved parking lot. Other local business who helped with the project included My Father's Son Fence who installed the fence. Today's garden Today the garden has a total of 61 plots (42 plots and 19 raised garden beds) for flowers and vegetables, twelve hose connections, two tool sheds, tables, chairs, benches, apple and pear trees, and a Biffy. Plot Map & Rates A place for everyone Garden plots are assigned to one person only and are not transferable. Current gardeners can reserve the garden plot they are using for the next season by paying both a deposit and the annual rental fee by end of September. New gardeners can rent an available garden plot for the next season by paying both a deposit and the annual rental fee beginning Oct 1. All gardeners are responsible for keeping their garden and the edges and paths around the garden weed free. All gardeners must plant their plot by June 1. • Columbarium | Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church | Prior Lake, MN

Shepherd of the Lake offers a beautiful alternative to traditional cemetery burial plots with our Columbarium. Columbarium We believe that every human life is uniquely blessed by God and the way we celebrate our loved ones upon their passing, as well as where they choose to be laid to rest, is a very personal decision. Shepherd of the Lake offers a beautiful alternative to traditional cemetery burial plots with our Columbarium. What is a Columbarium? A columbarium is a group of small compartments or niches designed to hold the cremated remains (cremains) of loved ones who have died. A columbarium is an alternative to cemetery burial plots. Cremains are placed in one niche with a granite front. Each niche includes an engraved bronze plaque on the exterior with name, birth and death dates. An Alternative to Cemetery Burial Plots Our ancestors were typically laid to rest in burial grounds adjoining rural churches or in city mega cemeteries. The increasing demand and cost of land have made large cemeteries less accessible, feasible, and affordable. While cremation rates are now approaching 70%, they are expected to top 90% in the near future. A practical alternative for burial has once again become sites adjacent to churches for the cremated remains of congregants and friends of the church. Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church is proud to offer Shepherd’s Path Memorial Columbarium as an alternative, covering our congregation throughout life and beyond. Have questions about our Columbarium? Please call the church office at 952-230-2988 or contact us online . Our Columbarium is located outdoors on the Shepherd of the Lake Campus at 3611 North Berens Road NW, Prior Lake, Minnesota.
